American Axe & Tool Co. Hewing Hatchet Head, Glassport PA
American Axe & Tool Company operated out of Glassport, Pennsylvania from 1889 until 1921, when it was absorbed by the Kelly Axe Manufacturing Company. This is a hewing hatchet head, a specialized single-bevel pattern used by carpenters to square timber and beams by hand: the flat face rides against the wood while the beveled face does the cutting, producing a smooth, flat surface.
A tight, honest head with good retained geometry throughout.
