Bridgeport Hardware "Matchless Opener" — Patented Nail Puller & Crate Hammer, Sept. 29 1908, Intact Wood Scales
A fully identified and dated American patent tool — the Bridgeport Hardware Mfg. Co. "Matchless Opener," US Patent 900,016, granted September 29, 1908, invented by Willis F. Hobbs of Bridgeport, Connecticut.
This tool was designed for opening wooden shipping crates: the double-claw end pulls nails (inner and outer claws projecting in the same plane), while the hammer head on the longer arm drives them back in or sets new ones. The wood handle scales are riveted to the iron spine — a point where most surviving examples show damage today, since users often hammered directly on the end of the handle until the scales split.
