French Serpette, Carved Ram Horn Handle, Manche Entier
This is a serpette, the classic French/Mediterranean fixed-blade vine and pruning knife pattern, in the one-piece "manche entier" style, the curved hook blade is riveted straight into the handle rather than folding. The handle is carved from a single piece of horn, very likely ram or sheep horn, in the rural folk-art tradition of shepherds and craftsmen carving their own horn-handled tools, often finishing the butt end in an animal or grotesque head as personal decoration. The hand-worked carved face at the pommel is consistent with that tradition rather than a cast or machine-turned piece.
No maker's mark is visible; the hand-forged look of the blade and its wear pattern suggest a late 19th to early-to-mid 20th century date, though this can't be pinned precisely without a stamp.
