This is a sgian-dubh (Scottish dress dagger) by John Nowill & Sons, a Sheffield cutlery firm whose corporate mark was granted by the Company of Cutlers in 1700, making it one of the oldest surviving names in English cutlery. The blade carries the maker's etched mark.

The handle is genuine stag, set with an oval cabochon stone at the pommel and finished with ornately engraved silver-toned mounts. It comes with its original leather sheath.
